A stinkin’ rose by any other name

It’s safe to say that many well-known Italian dishes wouldn’t taste the same without garlic. You can also claim that many other great cuisines depend on the savory attributes of this pungent bulb. Garlic, or allium sativum, is not only valued for its flavor-enhancing properties, but also for its proven or purported health benefits. So, let’s celebrate this culinary wonder at the Reno Garlic Fest. The annual event raises awareness of local garlic growers and features goods for sale from local farmers, food and drink vendors and more. The garlicky gala takes place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 3, at McKinley Arts & Culture Center, 925 Riverside Drive. Bring a blanket or a beach chair—and perhaps some breath mints. Admission is free. Visit www.facebook.com/RenoGarlicFest for more info.
